A symbol of friendship and remembrance, rosemary is a perennial shrub and can grow to six foot in height. Originating in the Mediterranean, the plant thrives in warm coastal places (the latin name rosmarinus meaning ‘dew of the sea’) but it can also withstand colder conditions and grows throughout winter.

An ancient culinary and medicinal herb, rosemary has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments and conditions within many cultures; historically believed to ward off evil, anxiety and bad dreams if you slept with a few sprigs under your pillow.

Rosemary has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidepressant, nervine, digestive and decongestant properties (amongst more), and can help to relieve headaches, clear blocked sinuses, soothe aching joints and muscles, aid digestion and boost memory by enhancing the cellular uptake of oxygen.

The flowers are also an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators in early spring. Legend has it that Mary mother of Jesus draped her cloak over a rosemary bush which turned the previously white flowers blue, hence the common name Mary’s Mantle.

A highly aromatic plant, fresh sprigs can be added to soups and stews, roasted with veg, and the leaves can be infused with hot water and drunk as a fragrant tea. Note: avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
